Welcome to Portland Medical Practice

 IMPORTANT NOTICE- ACUTE/SAMEDAY APPOINTMENTS

Have you woken up feeling 'under the weather' or are you suffering from a common problem or illness such as conjunctivitis, a cough, common cold, insect bites etc?

Remember you can receive advice and/or treatment WITHOUT needing to see a GP via the following methods:

  • Register for Pharmacy First- all of our local pharmacists are trained to treat many simple everyday illnesses and problems- if you don't usually pay for prescriptions, any medications you may need will be free! Ask at our reception Desk for details Or speak to a member of the PPG who will explain the process to you.
  • Call NHS 111.... By simply dialling 111!
  • Visit the Walsall (or other local) Urgent Care Centres- Walsall's are situated in the Saddlers Centre (via  Bridgman Street) and on the Manor Hospital site (Via Willbraham Road off Moat Road). Both are open until 8.00pm most days and at weekends.
  • Telephone the Practice and ask for advice from one of our Nurse Prescribers or GPs in our ' Acute/Sameday' clinic each morning.
  • Do NOT book appointments with GP or Nurse just to obtain a repeat prescription- these can be ordered by registering for 'Patient Access' on this website, faxing us, calling in to the Reception Desk or asking a local pharmacy to order on your behalf.

Also please note that Accident and Emergency Departments are ONLY for genuine Accident or emergency cases. We want to support our local hospitals in helping them in using their time for real Emergency situations.

Patient Access lets you use the online services, which include booking appointments, view test results, order repeat prescriptions, view medical record and updating your details. Ask at reception for details or visit

Extra GP appointments available for Walsall patients

Patients registered with a Walsall GP can benefit from the Extended GP Access Service.

NHS Walsall Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has worked with local GPs to create three Hubs based at Darlaston Health Centre in Darlaston, Pinfold Health Centre in Bloxwich and Broadway Medical Practice. The Hubs are currently run by a group of local GPS.

Since launching the service in December 2017 and up until May 2018, more than 8,500 patients have accessed the service.

When can I get an out-of-hours appointment?

Extra GP appointments on will be available between:

  • 6.30pm – 9pm weekdays
  • 10am – 3pm weekends (excluding Darlaston Health Centre)
  • 11am – 1.30pm Bank Holidays

However, people will only be seen if they have booked an appointment.

How can I book one of these appointments?

A dedicated number has been set up and appointments can be booked by calling 01922 501999 during the following times:

  • 8am – 9pm weekdays
  • 10am – 3pm weekends
  • 11am – 1pm bank holidays

NHS 111 will also be able to book an appointment for you if they feel you need to see a GP.

Do I need to be registered at one of the three surgeries where the Hubs are based to use the service?

No, you can be registered with any GP in Walsall to access the extra appointments. Please note you will need to travel to one the three Hubs (listed above).

What if I’m not registered with a Walsall GP?

If you are not a registered patient at a Walsall GP, you will not be able to access these out-of-hours appointments. More information about these services can be found on Walsall CCG’s website: www.walsallccg.nhs.uk.

When should I use the Hubs?

The extra appointments are for patients who have a pressing illness or injury and are unable to attend their GP during normal opening hours. They are not walk-in centres and both of Walsall’s urgent care centres and its A&E department will still be open as normal for people to use in serious or life threatening emergencies.
